Smart City in Malta May Help Tourism

TECOM is planning to establish a Smart City in Ricasoli for which it signed a contract with the Government of Malta. The investment is made by Dubai’s Tecom Investment, a Dubai government entity that manages Dubai Internet City, Dubai Media City and Knowledge Village. According to the government the above investment will lead Malta to be in the world’s IT map.

Subsequent to the above investment by Dubai, TECOM is scheduling to boots its Middle East investments in the coming years where it consists of a number of investments namely, Libyan, Tunisian, and Egyptian investments. The major independent investment in Middle East made by TECOM was Lafico, a joint venture of the Maltese-Libyan company working in the hotel and tourism, the resources, as well as manufacturing sector.

Some of the major attractions in Malta are the Maltese House of Character Malta tourism vacation hotel, which is one of its prettiest views in the village. Smart City may attract significant tourists in the near future.

Malta is also planning to enter into the European Union, so that the companies on the island benefit through European markets and in turn Malta can become the centre of education, healthcare, maritime tourism and financial services.

60% stake in Maltacom is acquired by Dubai-based Company from the Maltese government in May 2006, and the remaining 40% is registered on the Malta Stock Exchange since 1998, and previously the company was listed in a different exchange in London. As such it was a private company with no government involvement at all.

Malta is trying to magnetize foreign investment in the island as many industries have shut down and are moving on to other low-cost countries. Dubai’s Tecom Investment has invested in many industries besides Smart City, the largest foreign investment on the island.
