According to the press reports, Malta could be out of the list of destinations offered by the major tour operators from next summer. Although nothing is confirmed, one of the tour operators is trying to withdraw Malta from their holiday destinations. Hotel owners and a part of holiday industry in Malta are scared that once the one holiday company withdraw Malta from their holiday destinations then others will also follow the legacy and remove Malta from a mainstream holiday island.
Winner of the 'Holiday Company of the Year' in 2002, 2003, and 2004, the First Choice Holidays travel along with one of the UK's best known holiday companies have admitted to the independent Malta travel guide that although the business in the Malta market is difficult but have not announced that they are getting out of the Malta market.
Number of tourists visiting Malta has been decreased 10% year-over-year and on top of those visitors from UK has been decreased 13%, and the Italy market is also falling.  Real estate sector will also be affected along with the Malta holiday’s market. Price of the property in Malta had been increased and is the highest among the EU countries in 2004. Malta joining EU gives the hope to the speculator that prices of real estate in Malta will increase in the short and medium term and the reason.
Michael Johnson believes that people who visit Malta buy a property there as an investment for the future that they and their relatives come and stay for some while. But if lower number of tourists visits Malta, the number property buyers will also fall. Malta believes that soon the prices of property in Malta will fall and if the tour operators withdraw from Malta, the holiday market will collapse at an increasing rate.
Tour operators incurred a huge loss in bringing the tourists to the island and according to the Managing Director Roger Munns; the lower of Internet booking in the island is the major cause of lower number of tourists in Malta. Malta Tourist Authority has failed to promote the island properly in UK and so once the holiday market is promoted well the economy of the island will definitely boom.
